First edition in book form. Adickes 243 and Adickes 245. 'In 1784, Reinhold moved to Weimar, where he married the daughter of C.M. Wieland, editor of the influential Der Teutsche Merkur, to which Reinhold became a regular contributor. By far the most important of his contributions to the Merkur was his series of eight 'Letters on the Kantian Philosophy', which began appearing in 1786. What Kantianism meant to Reinhold is clearly expressed in the first of his many private letters to Kant: it resolves the debilitating conflict between faith and reason or 'superstition' and 'disbelief'. Accordingly, Reinhold's Letters emphasized the practical consequences for morality and religion of what Reinhold described as Kant's 'gospel of pure reason', thanks to which belief in God, in the immortality of the soul, and in the reality of free will have finally been placed on a sound philosophical footing' (Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century German Philosophers).
