First edition, card covers. 21 × 15cm, xii + 150pp. "Cortot had a horror of direct statement. Anyone who could not pick up the slightest hint of a suggestion went away without carrying much." So writes Thomas Manshardt, a private pupil of Cortot from 1957 until the great French pianist's death in 1962. During this period Manshardt not only gained great insight into Cortot's musical philosophy but discovered some revealing aspects of the man himself. In Aspects of Cortot he writes with subtlety and understanding about Cortot the sympathetic tutor, Cortot the incomparable pianist and Cortot the warm friend. Aspects of Cortot is also a unique manual for paino technique. That a method of playing the piano can be chosen for its emotional fluency rather than for the realisation of literal accuracy is a concept probably never before explored. Manshardt goes into detail on how the physical gestures used in performing upon the piano will influence the ultimate musical result. He also analyses Cortot's principles of phrasing and interpretation. The verve, the spontaneity that were so much a part of the playing of Cortot were not inspirations of the moment but in large part products of carefully considered musical 'grammar', the understanding of which is possible for all musicians.
