This Dayton, Ohio commercial artist became the foremost artist interpreter of Abraham Lincoln and his circle, illustrating every facet of Lincoln's life in various media over several decades; he authored and/or illustrated several Lincoln books, such as the 1963 classic "Lincoln in Photographs: An Album of Every Known Pose" (with Charles Hamilton). Unsigned print, 11½" X 14½", n.p., n.y. Fine. Pristine ink-and-wash black-and-white print depicting a young buffed Lincoln with rolled-up sleeves in the foreground shopping down a rotting old tree in which a young raccoon is stuck on a limb; a howling dog looks up at the 'coon from below; woods and a large wood-frame building fill the background. In part: "I finally finished a Lincoln portrait for you. I do hope you like it. It is an original, that is, a piece of art especially for you, and the only one of its kind. If for any reason you are not pleased with it, I will be glad to do another pose for you. Just return it, and I will try again! If you are satisfied, the agreed $25,00 will be okay. For others the price would be more, about $50. for a line ink drawing. Yes, I fully realize that artist get get $500,00 and more for magazine covers. On occasion I have been paid that much for full cover cover art. However, when the subject is to my liking, it is more of a pleasure to draw, and I enjoy doing things for my friends and for worthy institutions." Signed simply "Lloyd" in black ink.
