Kathy Elgin is from Lancashire and read English at London University, specialising in drama and nineteenth-century literature. She has been a dance and theatre critic, and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1987. Since then she has been head of the RSC's publications department, writing and researching the nightly programmes for productions of plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries.
