Vathek is a Gothic novel written by William Beckford. Vathek capitalized on the eighteenth century obsession with all things Oriental. William Beckford was also influenced by similar works from the French writer Voltaire. His originality lay in combining the popular Oriental elements with the Gothic stylings. Long out of print in this edition, the classicVathek is here reprinted with the magnificent Mahlon Blaine illustrations.
William Beckford: William Beckford (1760-1844), was an English novelist, a profligate and consummately knowledgeable art collector and patron of works of decorative art, a critic, travel writer and sometime politician, reputed at one stage in his life to be the richest commoner in England.
Mahlon Blaine: Mahlon Blaine was born in California in 1894. He served in World War I. His bohemian lifestyle was such that no one really knows when he died but it was probably around 1970.
David Whitlam: David Whitlam has been producing Surrealist art for over a decade. His passion for drawing began in childhood, but it was only while studying for a degree in Graphic Art that he became fascinated with the Surrealist Movement and the notion of producing work from the subconscious.
Donald Sidney-Fryer: Donald Sidney-Fryer (born September 8, 1934) is a poet and entertainer principally influenced by Edmund Spenser and Clark Ashton Smith. His poetry has continued to appear in a variety of weird fiction and speculative poetry-oriented journals.
Mahlon Blaine: Mahlon Blaine was born in California in 1894. He served in World War I. His bohemian lifestyle was such that no one really knows when he died but it was probably around 1970.
