New Netherland, worthy Reader, may be truly called, The Mother of States, for her Territory extended originally from the Chesapeake unto Cape Cod. In course of time, however, the Connecticut river became her Northern Boundary, and so continued to be until 1650, when, by the Treaty concluded at Hartford, her bounds upon the Main were fixed at the west side of Greenwich bay, being about four miles from Stamford, Conn., and upon Long Island, at Oysterbay - the portion east of this last mentioned locality belonging to the English, and the westernmost part of said Island, to the Dutch.
