Excerpt from When the Workmen, Help You Manage
We are not now asked by labor to find ways to pay higher wages through shorter hours. That is only one small phase of the employer employee situation. What we are now really asked (although not always in precise words) is to devise some method by which the very wage system can be saved. It is a challenge to show that capital has a function.
The fullest justification would be to show that the individual is better off under a wage than under any other system - that he is not a mere machine but a part of industry equal in dignity to any other part.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book addresses the issue of rebuilding the relationship between employer and employee in order to unlock greater industrial progress and avoid conflict. The author, a prominent expert in scientific management, argues that this issue is primarily a management issue and not merely a social one. He says that welfare work and profit-sharing are stopgap solutions that do not get to the core of the problem. Neither do piece rates, which tend to encourage employees to focus on quantity over quality and still do not guarantee a living wage consistently. Instead, the author proposes a system of guaranteed living wages alongside superimposed graduated bonuses based on performance. The book provides a comprehensive exploration of these issues, and it concludes that these insights are essential for any business that wants to succeed in the modern industrial landscape.
