First Words.

What hills and streams have taught to me,
How Heaven's face hath touched my heart,
In summer shine, neath winter skies,
To those who care, this I impart.

Some grains from Border days of old;
Weird visions e'en of earlier time!
High daring, glamour, hapless fate, -
These mingle in the changing rhyme.

Esteem or slight the simple song,
To me is nought, I thee assure;
Enough those thrillings of my heart -
Those Nature-breathings, sacred, pure
