The one magnificent and beneficent organization, the Grand Army of the Republic, to which the mind would naturally revert for comparison, differs so in purpose and in membership that the two rather supplement one another instead of running counter. Founded originally as an exclusive military organization one of the missions of the Loyal Legion has been to continue to promote the professional associations of the civil war, to strengthen the spirit of comradeship developed by that war, to publish and preserve the historical facts of the contest as they were seen by the individual, to preserve the records of the volunteers and to aid in perpetuating the patriotic spirit of the country That work it has been doing for many years and that work it has done well. Now the men who actually fought the civil war, the men who endured the hardships, the men who braved the dangers and who made the sacrifices are rapidly passing away. So rapidly that the time will soon be at hand when few will be the survivors who actually saw any service. Is it not pertinent then, when enough of the passing veterans are here to give expression to their wishes and to advise and counsel with us, to ask this question: What of the future of the Loyal Legion?
