Now, although Lambert was daily growing stronger and required no more medicine, Dr. Reeves still continued to visit him twice a day as regularly as clockwork; nor were his directions to Cissy any less minute because his patient was getting well, on the contrary, they seemed to increase every day, and the ten minutes' walk in the garden, or interview in the drawing-room, increased to half an hour, and even longer. Somehow nursing seemed to agree with Cissy, for she had never looked so pretty as she now did; she was always bright and happy, but now there was not a bird in the air who sung so blithely or had so light a heart as Cissy Hogg. Was it only the re-action after her anxiety about Lambert? or was it her joy at finding Sydney was innocent? or was it her relief at being out of debt? It could hardly be this last, for unless Lambert was paid for playing the organ, they would certainly soon be in difficulties again; his illness had been a great expense, and even without that they could scarcely have lived on their limited income; then there would certainly be a very long doctor's bill; how did Cissy propose to meet that? Had she somo secret fund of her own from which the debt was to bo discharged? If not, why was she so careless and lighthearted? It had not been so when she was in trouble about the butcher's bill, then she had fretted and worried and even cut off her hair to pay part of it; now with a sweet inconsistency peculiar to the sex, she went on running up a tremendous bill of Dr. Reeves, and never giving him so much as a hint that Lambert did not require him more than once a day.
