This is far from satisfactory. The Department is now living from hand to mouth, and is absolutely without reserve. The average number of logs supplied monthly to Departments was 646 logs during the previous year, and 556 during the year under report. On this subject the Deputy Conservator reports as follows:--This was done advisedly, because a great part of the 6tock was found to consist of inferior logs--accumulated rejections--which it was desirable to work off. The working balance of timber acceptable to the various departments was at no time large, for despite the stock balances the demand has always been greater than the supply. As regards the better species, particularly padowk, the stock was reduced by preparing export timber, mostly scantling for but few sound logs for squares were in stock--so as to make a stride with the introduction of this timber into the market. The maintenance of the export, coupled with the increase of the distances and the sickness and mortality among the elephants, have prevented the supply from being got much in advance of the demand. The new local demand for a few superior varieties, to the exclusion of others, previously supplied (and girdled for the purpose), will operate in the future as a check on supply, although it has not affected the year under report. 9.
