About the book >.>.> IN 1974 at the time of local government reorganisation the Municipal Borough of Scunthorpe was the largest town in North Lindsey, known throughout the world for its latest contribution to the British steel industry, the giant Anchor Works, and looking to a prosperous future in steel. Rail marshalling yards, a direct link to an ore terminal at Immingham nineteen miles away and a constant stream of heavy lorries carrying steel products to other areas betokened heavy industry on a huge scale. This was a far cry from the Scunthorpe of 130 years before. Scunthorpe then was not even the largest of the five townships which were to make up the modern borough, Ashby was, and the total population of the five, Crosby, Scunthorpe, Frodingham, Brumby and Ashby, at the 1851 Census was a mere 1.245 The Steel Corporation had selected Scunthorpe for major development for the production of steel because of the existing facilities, the availability of land and the nearness of a deep.
