The 19th century saw a dramatic increase in the demand for stained glass, stimulated by the great architects of the Gothic revival. This book surveys the growth and development of the art on a national level, then proceeds to a detailed local study of stained glass in Suffolk. A general introduction on design, techniques and developments in stained glass during the century leads into the Gazetteer, and is based on research and visits to every church in the county, setting down the principle facts of all the existing stained glass windows. A directory supplies information on designers and workshops, with dates and locations of their works in the county and brief notes on the history of the firms. There is also biographical details on a number of local glass painters, including Robert Allen of Lowestoft, Robert and John King of Ipswich, Constantine Woolnough of Framlingham, Henry Fisk of Oxford, and a number of others. The author has previously written "Nineteenth-Century stained glass in Norfolk".
