Descripción Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: very good. First edition. First printing. Fine in very good dust jacket. Oversized hardcover. xiv+ 450 pp. with bibliography, index. Writings of Old and New World Hispanic Nuns of the 16th to 18thcenturies have, like mother nun writers, been inaccessible and unknown to the reading public until the publication of this imporatnt book. A few of these prolific, sensitive, and skilled writers like St. Teresa of Avial and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz were published authors, but most of the sisters' autobiographies, histories, letters and poems remained in convent archives. The nuns' works were often assigned by male confessors and subject to constant scrutiny by the Inquisition, ofern elaborately worded to render ambiguous and acceptable the feelings of the women who chose convent life. They frequetly participated in the political and religious life of their times, skillfully manipulating the male hierarchy and sometimes suffering for thier words. The reader is also offered glimpses of daily life in the convent, including the literary "recreations", dramas that entertained and instructed, written to relieve the lives of rigorous discipline.
