like the poet William Blake - who saw the world in a grain of sand - the photographer Kenneth Libbrecht has devoted years to exploring an equallt tiny world: the spectacular crstalline ice sculptures that are snowflakes. Althoguh snow still covers vast areas of the Earth's surface, and individual flakes are beyond counting, each and every one is a unique structure, a miniature marvel taht might survive for weeks or moths - or exsist for only an instant. In his book The Art of The Snowflake, Dr Libbrecht explains that much of his work is done in his lab in california, but as his interest in this area has developed, he has spent increasing amounts of time in colder parts of canda and the United States, taking with him a prtable photo-microscope. 'Once a crystal is under the microscope, i have anywhere form a few minutes, on colder days, to a few seconds to adjust the lighting, focus and take the shot,' Dr Libbrecht says.'Everything must be done outside and only my camera has the luxuxry of a heater to keep it warm. it's an unusuall pursuit, but I enjoy it immensly. Nature provides so much to see and ponder, even in the cold winds of winter'. --Saga Magazine

There is something magical about snow and snowflakes that captures and enchants us, be it a light flurry or a landscape full of deep drifts. These exquisite temporary works of art are tiny crystalline masterpieces, each as different from the next as one person is from another. But all too soon they melt and vanish. This book captures the perfect geometry and exquisite beauty of nature with 240 different photographs of these individual marvels. As much a work of art as a testament of science, Kenneth Libbrecht s book reveals how one of snowflake s most inspired photographers came to such intimate knowledge of his craft and its fleeting focus. Beautiful pictures illustrate his story of the microphotography of snow crystals, from the pioneering work of Wilson Bentley in the 1890s up to the present digital age. These delicate, breathtaking images are brought together in a stylish art book that is also a science guide, a photography manual and a valuable resource for nature-lovers --New Classics, january, 2010

Reseña del editor:
The perfect geometry and exquisite beauty of nature is nowhere so clear to us as in the snowflake. But how have we been able to appreciate this infinitesimal wonder in all its crystalline glory? This book, as much a work of art as a testament to science, reveals how one of the snowflake’s most inspired photographers came to such intimate knowledge of his craft and its fleeting focus. Beautiful pictures illustrate Kenneth Libbrecht’s story of the microphotography of snow crystals, from the pioneering work of Wilson Bentley in the 1890s right up to Ken’s own innovations in our age of digital images. A breathtaking look at the works of art that melt in an instant, this is a book to page through and savor, season after season.
