At the impressionable age of ten, the author is unexpectedly confronted with the disturbing news of his parents’ pending divorce and his subsequent banishment to boarding school. Anticipating confinement in a totalitarian, military-style establishment, he is pleasantly surprised to find himself a resident of an expansive Tudor mansion set on 45 acres in Kloof, a leafy suburb of South Africa’s Kwazulu-Natal province. So commences a highly entertaining seven-year sojourn from boyhood, through the proverbial minefield of puberty, to the advent of adolescence. A cast of exceptionally amusing classmates and equally eccentric educators provide a colourful backdrop to the author’s hilarious journey of heart-warming successes and humiliating failures, as he navigates the complex microcosm of boarding school life.
