Dr Frederick Starks is celebrating his 53rd birthday when a most unwelcome letter arrives at his consulting room. It begins "Welcome to the first day of your death". The letter goes on to tell him that he has 15 days to discover who the writer is and that he must advertise it in the New York Times.
