First impression of the true first edition, published in the UK by William Heinemann in September 1968. With 32 pages of monochrome photographs. Classic 1960s jacket design by Alan Aldridge. ***Very good in purple cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. There is a light vertical reading crease to the spine. Corners sharp. No tears to the cloth. The top edge and fore edge of the text block are discoloured and lightly foxed. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. No tears or creases to the pages. Slight offsetting to the endpapers but interior pages clean. ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper with some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling. The dustwrapper has been corner price-clipped, but is otherwise complete, without any chips - just some light creasing at the extremities. There is a 2cm closed tear at the top of the spine with some associated creasing to the top of the back panel. It was written with the full cooperation of the Beatles and chronicles the band's career up until early 1968, two years before their break-up. It was the only authorised biography of the Beatles written during their career. Davies published revised editions of the book in 1978, 1982, 1985, 2002 and 2009. According to Davies, the authorised history was initially viewed as "quite daring and revealing", particularly in the US, and to quote the Beatles using the word "fuck" was "most unusual in a popular book at the time". Jonathan Gould considers it to be a worthy account of the band's history. He says that, aside from its few factual errors, the book deserves its status as an authoritative source for subsequent Beatles biographies.
