In my opinion, its empirical and factual rather than sociopolitically discursive orientation makes this text book highly superior to other recent publications with similar titles and goals. It presents a concise, balanced and nevertheless informative of global varieties of English today. As a textbook it deserves to be heartily recommended.
English World Wide 26:1
The book is a good text book of both the English language and sociolinguistics.
This is a concise and very readable introduction to a vast topic... As an undergraduate textbook, this is a very useful book indeed.

The book is illustrated with fascinating examples of varieties of English taken from fiction, popular culture, newspapers, and transcriptions of the recordings on the accompanying CD. This enthralling book includes an introduction to the principles of linguistic variation and sections on the roots of English (including Scots); the spread of English; varieties of English as a second language; English as a foreign language; and future trends.
