Bob Woffinden reveals the extent to which innocent people who are imprisoned in British jails due to the inadequate criminal justice system in the UK. He investigates, among other injustices, how the criminal appeal system does not act as an effective long-stop in detecting cases of judicial error. Chapters on Hanratty, the Birmingham pub-bombing case and other less well-known cases are included. Since 1978 he has worked as a freelance journalist, contributing to newspapers and magazines including the "New Statesman", for which he wrote a series on "Innocent women in prison" in 1985. He also writes regularly for "The Listener" and the London Daily News".
