Críticas:
'a gladly recommended read for literates ... It would also be a useful preliminary for those about to start theological or religious studies.' Peter Akehurst, Christian Weekly Newspapers Series

'the clearest introduction that I have yet read ... This book is meant for the student. Its clarity and good judgement will be of great help to all readers. This is a small book but its readers will find it pure gold.' Canon Joseph Robinson, Master of the Temple, Church Times

'Richard Coggins has given us a superb introduction to the Old Testament, which reveals the orderliness of his own mind and inspires confidence ... a most comprehensive view of current approaches and debates ... It is thoroughly up to date' The Expository Times

`There are clear, concise presentations of current scholarly approaches to the major areas of Old Testament study, and well-balanced evaluations of their usefulness.' The Month

`This is an excellent book for those about to embark upon Reader training and a very valuable summary of the various approaches to Old Testament studies offered to us in recent years.' The Reader
Reseña del editor:
Study of the Old Testament has long been dominated by what is sometimes called the `historical-critical method': careful analysis of individual books in order to discover their component sources, with great emphasis on historical context and concern, especially in the prophetic books, to isolate what was original and (it was therefore assumed) most important. In recent years people have asked whether this approach is the only proper one, and whether there may not be alternative understandings which are equally valid. This book attempts to outline some of those alternatives while retaining the values of the traditional methods. Nine separate chapters set out the importance of sociology and anthropology, of liberation and feminist perspectives, and of literary criticism, as well as the more traditional approaches, in a way that will be comprehensible to those approaching the Old Testament for the first time as well as for those who are not satisfied with existing conventions of study.
